With over 35,000 acres of terrain, San Juan Untracked is the largest snowcat skiing and snowboarding operation in the United States. From rolling glades to wide open bowls, cliffs, chutes, gullies and trees blanketed in abundant snowfall, San Juan Untracked offers an exceptional backcountry experience to skiers and riders of all abilities through daily guided trips departing from Durango Mountain Resort. Equipped with three passenger cats and two Mattracks vans, we have a comfortable, reliable means of access to exceptional and powdery terrain. San Juan Untracked proudly operates under a special use permit with the cooperation of the U.S. Forest Service in the San Juan National Forest.

Location

Located north of historic downtown Durango, Colorado in the ruggedly pristine San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, San Juan Untracked is a short drive from Durango, Silverton, or Telluride. Our territory accesses a triangle of terrain between Telluride, Silverton and Durango including Cascade Creek, Hotel Draw, Grayrock and Graysill peaks.

Guides

Everyone likes to have fun, but safety for our clients is our number one priority. All of our ski and snowboard guides are professionally certified with first aid and avalanche safety training. In addition, we have mutual response agreements with Durango Mountain Resort ski patrol. Our snowcats are equipped with a full line of first aid and rescue gear. Along with these certifications and precautions, we have experienced explosives technicians to mitigate avalanche danger.

BACKUP EQUIPMENT

Despite regular maintenance, equipment can fail. We have a backup snowcat and a backup van, along with backup ski and snowboard equipment so that our clients don’t skip a beat or miss out on an epic powder day.

SAFETY

All of our guides are highly trained in CPR, first aid, backcountry and avalanche safety. We also have a mutual response agreement with local ski patrols in case of an emergency.

VARIETY

We have a bevy of terrain—steeps, trees, big-mountain bowls, chutes and cliff lines. We cater to advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders as well as those eager to explore the backcountry.
